Fish Trap

Name/Title

Fish Trap

Entry/Object ID

E-6

Description

Lobster trap made of wood and plant fibers. All four of the arms at the bottom are wrapped with what seems like concrete or some type of stone, possible to keep it in place while in the water.

Use

Used by fisherman in the Polynesian Islands. They typically have a funnel opening that leads to the trap so fish cannot escape. A bottom opening would have held a stone weight.

Context

Used by women to catch fish and shrimp. They would place the trap in shallow water were shrimp were known to hide, covering it with leaves and branches. Once filled, the women would dive down to retrieve the trap.
