Description

A fish trap made from woven plant fibers.

Use

Commonly used by fisherman in the Polynesian Islands, they had a funnel that lead down to the trap so fish could not escape. A bottom opening usually held a stone weight.

Context

Used by women to catch fish and shrimp. They would place the trap in shallow water were shrimp were known to hide, covering it with leaves and branches. Once filled, the women would dive down to retrieve the trap.
