Description

The first commercial "Tesla Coil" as labeled such in the United States. Sold for X-Ray use.

Context

The first commercial <high frequency> coil in the United States was manufactured by Elihu Thomson. Both Thomson and L. E. Knott Apparatus's coil were oil-filled and cumbersome to move... this is largely why the Swett & Lewis Kinraide Coil was so successful early on. It is believed this coil was designed by E. Cate according to Dr. Frederick Finch Strong (High Frequency Currents, 1908, Rebman Publishing).
