Description

Daniel McFarlan Moore Lamp - Early example of gas discharge lamp using carbon dioxide

Use

Moore produced a highly intriguing series of gas discharge lamp designs and concepts in the 1890s. While gas discharges were used in Geissler and Gassiot tubes as early as the 1850s, most were regarded as scientific or artistic curiosities rather than practical sources of illumination.

Context

Daniel McFarlan Moore, Peter Cooper Hewitt, and Nikola Tesla were all looking independently and simultaneously for solutions more efficient than the incandescent light bulb.
