Addison Febr: 27th 1862?
Dear Son!
Yours of the 19th I have received and Should have answered it immediately but could not get time very well untill(sic) to day, we are all tolerable well at home except George who is troubled with a sore finger for Some days I hope though it will not be of a Serious nature, Herman has not been here for nearly four week; but will perhaps come home next Saturday we are somewhat alarmed a bout you in consequence of Your poor health and Should like to hear from you again very Soon, and if your health does not improve it would perhaps be better for you to come home, for your Studies must certainly Worry you, and your health does not improve I am afraid it will be impossible for you to tend to School but you will the best judge yourself, I only hint this to you because I have no faith in these liver complaints, I have been told by Doctors occasionally that defects on the liver are very genarally(sic) in this country and very often have bad results, it may be neccessarry(sic) to be on your guard and not worry more than you can Stand. The Arguments in your last letter are right enough, I cannot help to agree with you in most instances, I hold that a Jung mann can never learn to much it is just as good for a farmer to have studiet(sic) and learned much as for any body els(sic), but I beleave(sic) if you conclude to go into Farming it is getting time for you to be on a farm, and learn to get used to everything wich(sic) is necessary to be a good Farmer wich(sic) is by no means a very easy Task and requires considerably exertions more whatever I choose to be to do or to perform I like to be to do and to perform well, I like very well to be a farmer but it vexes me Som (sic) that I am not as good a farmer as I See Some others are and I should be an artist if I could be a good one and I should like to be a lawyer if I could be a good lawyer and So Should I like most every other vocation if I would do well in it, but in every thing where I doubt of being Succesfull(sic) I dont(sic) beleave(sic) in going into. As far as I am personally concerned I think it answer well for me if you stay at home and help to manage the farm, I perceive that I am a great deal more bothered Since Henry has left us, and as I am getting older my Strengt(sic) is diminnishing(sic) and you know I dont(sic) always agree very well with hired men, perhaps I am often to blame for it, but cannot help it, but you can do as you like it best, I will try to get along the best way I can, expecting to hear from you again Soon, I will close and remain,
Your affectionate
Father
