Dear Brother!
We received your letter and were very glad that you write again we are all well yet. We have not received a letter from August for a long while but we received one from Henry Reinking and he wrote that that[sic] had to leave their place and so they all sent their overcoats and blankets. The 8th 17th and 12th cavalry reg are here now, and most all of them have enlisted for the second time, Gustavas Kiessling and some other boys, have enlisted in the 17th. There are so few hiererd[sic] men here and these that are will get high wages from 180 to 200 Dollars per year. The grain, corn, potatoes, butter and eggs are very dear here The linseed costs about $2.50 to 2.75 and the barley about $1.20 the wheat $1.10 the oat .65 the corn 1.00 the potatoes $1.00 the butter about .25 the eggs .50 to .75 and the milk about 12 cents per gallon. The coffee costs 50 cents the tea about 12 shillings per pound and the sugar about 15 to 20 cents.
We have had a nice skateing(sic)-ice and we have been runing(sic) skates like thunder but is getting warmer here and the ice is melting again. The 17th August will come very soon and then your time will be out, Fred Grothman always says if you would enlist again, he would come and enlist too.
As I do not know anymore to write I will close, by giving you my best respect.
Your truely[sic]
brother George.
