(Translated from German) Addison, January 29th, 1865 Dear Son! We got your letter from Bloomington. As soon as we got it, I began a letter to you, but was interrupted and have not, until now, had time to finish it. Since, as you know, Hermann is no longer here I have things to do on all fronts, which explains why I push things aside that are not urgent. We are assuming that you are better now, because you are no longer writing about your fall in the barn, which had us rather worried. According to your letter, it will cost a lot this winter {,} especially in Bloomington the prices seem high. I have nothing against you continuing you studies, but since you would have to go into debt, which would mean becoming a soldier again, we do not agree in the least. What would be the point of that? It is also high time that you finally decide what you will do for a living. You already know that I want to stay with us, to take some of the weight off my shoulders, since I am growing tired of having to run in every direction at once. If you do not want to become a farmer, I will not insist upon it {.} The only thing is that I would like you to decide soon what you will do for a living {;} I would also like to know what you decide so I can act accordingly. If it is money you need, all you have to do is write, since I am still in a position to simply give it to you, if you need it. If there is some profession in which you want to prepare yourself, ten you should pursue your goal soon. It matters little if it costs more or less, I only want it to be useful in the future. I, at least, am satisfied with my position, and even when I have a lot of work and effort to put in, I would not wish it to be different. Life in the country has always stimulated me more than any other profession. Therefore, I have worked hard to make it easy for my children to get used to farming and to make progress through it. If they have no desire to be farmers, I will do everything in my power to support them in the profession that they choose. We are all healthy and well, and are working a hard to meet the quota for the last order, but have had no success so far. I would love if I just could send away the big guys who are still here who have the biggest mouth at celebrations. Write as soon as you are able. I will forward the letters and photos from the 33rd Regiment that have come for you so far. Mother sends her heartfelt greetings. Hermann will perhaps come home next Sunday, and there is always enough for him to do. I wish you the best and remain, Your father, H.D. Fischer
