Noyesville(?)March 28th/63 Dear Brother As I have a few moments to spare from my usual studies, I will improve them by writing to you. When father wrote his last letter he told me to write sometime during the week as he did not write a long letter, I therefore should have written before, but I was so much occupied by copying and learning my part in the Exhibition besides studying the usual lessons, that not till today (Friday) could I get any time. We receive letters occasionally (once or twice a week) from Augustus, in his last letter he sent an acct. of those of their Co. which were not with them any more. It is nearly as follows: died 9, discharged 6 and Deserted 4.(Would that they might be caught) resigned Capt Jones which makes 20 as near as I can number. I do not think you know any of them except Died. Fischer who died at Louisville and John Schott who was discharged. Henry Schmidt, Wm Speseberg were there (at Gallatin) the former to get John Schott the latter to visit his son, they said that those well were all content and satisfied, from their report as well as from correspondence with John Gager of Co B. it appears that they are all perfectly satisfied with Aug. as an officer. The latter writes “He is a good officer and possesses the entire respect of all who are acquainted with him.” By the way, did you ever receive the “Northern Illinoian” containing a list of the 4 Co’s from DuPage? if not there a great many acquaintances in Co I that you do not know of. I shall attend school only 3 week after this for then the term closes and then we have our exhibition. Last year I sincerely belived (sic) that you would be present at this exhibition but now I think it impossible Mr Grothmann, Ferdinand Reinking and myself went to Chicago to a war claim office to apply for pension we had the papers made out & sworn to, and I think they were sent to Washington, at the same time we had our photographs taken. I had half a dozen (small) but only two of them left, having given the rest to friends, If you wish I’ll send one to you. But it is time to return to my lessons So excuse me. Give my respects to Mr Schermer, Wakeman & others and accept the same for yourself from Your Brother Herman
