Letter to Frederick J.T. Fischer in the 33rd Illinois Infantry Regiment dated Oct. 1, 1863 from his brother Herman in Addison, Illinois. He writes their letters do not seem to be delivered to Frederick although he answers every one. He writes their father plants to send him to Commercial College in Chicago. He asks Frederick to write to their cousins as they (and here he mentions Caroline) hesitate to write first to any man. He writes the family is well and several members are in Chicago that day having teeth pulled, etc. Inked script is on one side of a lined sheet.

Addison Oc br 1st /63 Dear Brother Your letter dated Sep 2d was received last Sunday.and contents were immediately read. You did not yet seem to have received any letters although numbers were sent to you since the Siege of Vicksburg. In your last letter to me you stated that you did not receive an answer to your previous letter to me. I overlooked this in answering the letter, now I tell you I answered every single letter you wrote to me. In fact it seems that most of our letters do not reach you, while most of yours come to hand. Father has resolved to put me in the Commercial College at Chicago coming winter & probably I shall go. Our Cousins are exasperated because you do not write to them. Some few weeks ago Sunday Miss Caroline spoke about it. She called you – I don’t know what – and stated that perhaps she would write to you, but she was afraid you woud[sic]not answer, I assured her you would. But she hesitated thinking it unbecoming to write to a Solider or any other man without being asked by him. If you wish to avoid being lectured by the young ladies on your return – make peace with them by satisfying their desires immediately. Your Uncles, August, Mr Bielfeld, Franzen etc, would also like to hear from you especially Bielfeld. Can you not manage to write to them ? We are all well. Father, Mother, Sister in law, Elisa, Willie and our little niece Alvina are in Chicago to day having teeth pulled etc. In hopes of speedy answer I remain In haste Your Brother Herman
