Use

Students were taught to recreated specific weave structures, darning samplers exhibited their aaccomplishments in a demonstration of sophisticated and skilled needlework ability.

Context

Darning samplers present stunning graphics and demonstrate refined needlework abilities. This 18th century example is one of only two known to have been worked at the Bocking School, which was in Essex, approximately 40 miles from London. The other Bocking sampler, dated 1799, is published as figure 124 in Averal Colby's Samplers and closesly resembles this example by H. Jewitt. The two samplers attest to the considerable skill of the Bocking School teacher.
