17th century, Embroidery, StumpworkDescription
Cavalier and lady accompained by their servants in the center, surrounded with flora, fauna and foliate motifs with a castle in the upper left and a woman emerging from a tent in the upper right. Trimmed with needlelace and beads; burlwood and gold frame.Use
Typically these Stumpwork embroidery scenes would be panels on caskets. This one is very large, and it is unclear if that is how it was originally used.Context
A lovely scene of a cavalier and his lady. She is accompanied by the sense of smell (who is unfinished), and he is accompanied by his manservant with his horse. There is also a knight, and another lady emerging from a tent in the upper right. A large castle is stitched in the upper left, including castle wall and gates. A grotto with a fish is at the center bottom, flanked by a lion and a leopard. There are many animals, including a stag, dog, squirrel, and a rodent, along with many insects and birds. Gardens were glorified in the 17th century in England, and this piece definitely exhibits all of the wonders of a fine garden.Collection
