The left half of the 15 rectangular blocks, each showing a different , intricate needlework pattern; the right half organized in three bands, the top two alphabets, the middle with three large flowers, and the bottom with an intricate basket of fruit and flowers, two potted fruit trees and little birds, with the maker's initials embroidered in seed pearls; gilt frame.

Use

A sampler to save and record patterns and motifs which also showcases the skill of the needleworker.

Context

This particular style of sampler was made in southern Germany in the second quarter of the 18th century. Highly sophisticated blocks of patterns showcasing the stitchers skill dominate these samplers along with large motifs of flower sprigs. This sampler also includes an intricate basket of fruit and flowers, two potted fruit trees and little birds. The samplermaker used seed pearls to initial their work. Alphabets and numbers are included on these samplers, but were of less importance than the showcasing of the needleworker's skills. This distinguishes these examples from British and American samplers.
