Sampler, Adam & Eve, Justice, Counted-thread embroidery, EmbroideryDescription
A stylized garden scene with flowering trees and animals flanking a central scene of Adam and Eve standing on either side of the tree below the figure of Justice holding scales and sword.Context
An early 18th century sampler depicting the Garden of Eden presided over by Justice, goddess of natural law, order, and justice. It shares elements found on 17th century canvaswork landscape embroideries, most notably, the geometric clouds. Square samplers, like this one, gained popularity amongst schoolgirls in the 18th century. It includes a charming mix of flora and fauna, and even includes artistic perspective in its execution of the lawn where the ducks are congregating.Collection
