Description

A rectangular box set with faceted conforming lid. the box veneered in mother-of-pearl lozenges, and the lid composed of central Balthasar Wigand watercolor view of Weilburg Palace bordered by mother-of-pearl. The box is set with gilt metal lock, opening to interior featuring cord bordered mirror and removeable velvet fitted tray containing mother-of-pearl sewing tools, including scissors, stiletto, parasol -shaped needle case, thimble, knife, folding knife, winder and threader.

Context

The exterior lid of this lovely box includes a miniature watercolor painting by Balthasar Wigand. During his lifetime, his paintings were highly popular and found on many 'every-day' objects.The box has fine mother-of-pearl veneers with elaborate gilt escutcheon, and frame that surround a miniature watercolor featuring an elaborate background including the Weilburg palace with surrounding towers, countryside, mountains, rivers, bridge, village and a wide boulevard with 17 persons featured in various activities. The case opens to mirrored backwith coral cording and with original velvet-fitted base containing an original set of mother-of-pearl sewing tools. The tray lifts out for access to hidden compartment below, including key.
