Description

The small pouch with double-sided needlework and blue drawstring including silver metal wrapped decoration with stylized torches and flames; the upper portion with two square registers, the lower border and drawstring with three silver thread flower tassels

Use

These bags were made for a variety of purposes: carriers for small devotional books and personal Bibles; gifts for friends, patrons, or royalty at New Year's; containers for seals; or fresheners filled with sweet powder to lay between stored garments.

Context

An example of early 17th century needlework dating from the reign of King James I (1603-1625). The opulence of this piece demonstrates the extravagance of the English aristocracy of the early 17th century.
