1997.1.1Description
The sampler with stylized meandering floral motif encloses various stylized trees, geometric devices, animals and the inscription, "Whilst Shepherds Watched Their Flock By Night/All Seated on the Ground the Angel Came Down/And Glory Shown Around". A small wreath on the lower left includes the name of the maker, Ann Jones, and a small wreath on the lower right includes the date 1818. The background fabric is a fine linen gauze, and the stitching is very fine and tiny. There is a combination of tiny cross stitches and satin stitches.Context
The verse is attributed to a Christmas carol describing the Annunciation to the Shepherds, with words attributed to Irish hymnist, lyricist and England's Poet Laureate Nahum Tate, c 1696. Another similar sampler was made in Sudbury, Suffolk, UK, and it is likely that this sampler is also attributed to Sudbury, Suffolk.Collection
