Two seated figures representing Spring and Fall within a metal thread cartouche, flanked by a leopard and lion in the lower corners, birds in the upper corners, and a castle in the background; painted and giltwood frame, new museum glassUse
This embroidery was most likely a panel on a girl's casket, possibly the top.Context
In 17th century England, it was the culmination of a young girls education to create a casket (a box), most often with Stumpwork embroidery adorning the box. Allegorical figures were popular themes for the scenes on these embroideries. Here we have two female figures representing Spring and Fall. The lion and leopard in the lower corners are found in many of these embroideries in the same locations as on this embroidery. The cartouche is masterfully stitched in metal threads, including silk wrapped purls.Collection
