Context

In 1759 Thaddeus Partridge of Roxbury and Jane Johnson of Boston announced their intention to marry. The sampler maker, their daughter Jane, was born November 19, 1760. On March 31, 1779, five years after making her sampler, she married William Dorr (1757-1840) of Roxbury. At age 18, William served as a fifer in a company out of Roxbury, and accompanied General Benedict Arnold on the expedition to Quebec in September 1775, marching through the Maine wilderness. Published information denotes that it was on that march that William found an idyllic spot near a spring formed from the Kennebec River, and returned to it with his wife Jane in 1788, thus founding the town of Hallowell, outsied of Augusta. They raised their nine children there and remained an important part of Hallowell. Jane Partridge Dorr died on 1849 at the age of 89.
