Description

Lois Butterworth Flame Stitch Sampler

Use

Possibly intended as practice for a pocketbook but was never made up into one

Context

Flame stitched pocketbooks were popular accessories for men in the colonies during the mid 18th c. It is likely that Lois stitched hers as a practice for making up a pocketbook for a man in her life. Lois completed her sampler in 1756 and two years later, on March 13, 1758, she married Benjamin Barton, Jr., where they resided in Swansea, MA. Benjamin served as a captain during the Revolutionary War. The couple had four children, Captain Joseph Baron, Benjamin Barton, Rebecca Barton, and Andrew Barton. Lois was born September 25, 1734 to Joseph Butterworth and Hopestil Cole Butterworth. Joseph and Hopestil had two daughters, Lois and Hannah. Hannah died on March 13, 1750, six years before Lois finished her sampler, and on what appears to be Lois' 16th birthday.
