Description

Two large needlepainted flowers flank a couched raised cartouche showing a needlepainted nobleman in front of a castle holding a staff or shepherd's crook. In a molded oak frame with a green velvet mat.

Use

Possibly was a panel on a girl's casket

Context

In 17th century England, it was the culmination of a young girls education to create a casket (a box), most often with Stumpwork embroidery adorning the box. The scene of this embroidery is typical of the motifs and scenes found on these caskets. The lady possibly represents the sense of scent, as she is holding a flower.
