Description

A rectangular box with sloped lid decorated in parquetry patterns centering a red needleworked pincushion set within an ebonized molded mount. The lid and base fitted with similar ebonized molded trim atop bun feet. The interior decorated in stylized vine design.

Use

To keep tools for needlework at hand and beside a workspace

Context

The slant topped- sewing box with elaborate inlay designs on the top and sides, has flattened ball feet, cast ball studs, and alarge framed needlework pincushion centering the lid. The entire interior is covered with hand-painted paper with raised design and there is a marquetry wood panel with floral design at the center inside lid. The base has built in shelves and the case is bound with large cast iron handmade hinges, and has its original lock and key.
