Name/Title

Erskine College Charter, 1850

Secondary Title

AN ACT TO CHARTER AND INCORPORATE ERSKINE COLLEGE, AT DUE WEST, IN ABBEVILLE DISTRICT.

Description

The South Carolina State Assembly responded favorably to the Synod's request for a seminary charter in 1837. However, the Assembly declined to act four years later when Synod requested a charter for the new college. Two objections were raised: Legislators feared that Erskine would draw students and support away from the State college in Columbia, and sentiment ran strongly against chartering Christian denominational schools. Persistent petitions for a state charter finally prevailed and a charter was granted in 1850.
