Painting of Ebenezer Erskine Pressly (1808 - 1860) first president of Erskine. Pressly was one of the five directors for the original academy and became a professor of divinity at the seminary. When the four-year college was formed in 1839, Pressly became its first president. Source: A History of Erskine College by Lowry Ware This 1847 painting by Charles H. Kingsmore is not only an important image of Erskine’s first president but is also an important example of American provincial art in the mid-nineteenth century.
