Half Dome Trail View
October 2014
In the past, overcrowding at Half Dome could lead to dangerous conditions. On peak days there could be as many as 1,200 hikers on the trail — in 2009, two people died while climbing the cables. In 2010, Yosemite instituted a permit system, granting only 300 Half Dome hiking permits per day in advance, plus 50 by daily lottery. Fines of $5,000 and a possible 6 months in jail await hikers who try to sneak through.
