Robbin Légère Henderson created this poster for Art Against Apartheid, an organization led by people in the arts to raise awareness about the injustice of the U.S.-supported apartheid regime of South Africa. She built the print’s color layer separations and selected the lively Africa-inspired colors, including the metallic ink on the saxophone. In addition to her work as an artist, Henderson cofounded Southern Exposure Gallery and spent 20 years as director of the Berkeley Art Center.
When turning a photograph into a screenprint, one technique was to re-photograph it at different exposures. This produced black and white “posterized” images that could be used to expose the screen and be printed in solid flats of whatever color was desired.
