At the time of this print, Rupert Garcia was gaining recognition in the art world and wanted to bring his Chicano perspective to a larger audience. This poster – the first that Jos Sances printed for Garcia – began a long relationship between artist and printer.
The bold, simple shapes suggest that these posters would be easy to print, but they are not. Garcia usually provided Sances with a cartoon drawing and color swatches. Sances would cut the rubylith stencil film and print a proof; Garcia then adjusted the color, added paint, or picked a different color. Lining up the shapes was like a jigsaw puzzle, and applying large flat areas of color easily distorted the paper. Now, many of the screenprints printed by Sances are recreated at other studios from laser-cut block prints.
