Fuentes created this design at the request of an organization supporting Peltier, an American Indian Movement activist sentenced to two life terms for the 1975 killing of two FBI agents on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Reservation. Supporters questioned the fairness of his trial, and continue to campaign for his release. The poster draws parallels between Peltier’s case and historical struggles of Native peoples through the inclusion of General Custer, portrayed here in a torn picture. The feathers, as well as the traditional colors of the four directions, further connect Peltier with Native cultures.
