The success of traveling exhibit “Art Against U.S. Intervention in Central America” led several of the same organizers, including Peter Selz and Betty Kano, to develop another effort, “Art Against Apartheid.” Artists donated hundreds of pieces for the show, all expressing their opposition to apartheid. Mexican-American artist Enrique Chagoya designed the project’s logo. Here, Sances includes an image of a woman in prison, based on a photo of Winnie Mandela, with rays of light emanating from her eyes. The shape around the figure suggests both a shield and a yoni, or womb, emphasizing women’s role in the struggle.
