Castro made this poster for a documentary film by Lourdes Portillo and Susana Muñoz, “Las Madres.” It details the heroic women who drew attention to their children, disappeared by the Argentine military dictatorship between 1976-1983. The Mothers defied the dictatorship through steadfast public demonstrations that exposed the junta’s violations of human rights. Gráfica has always been experimental in its approach to screenprinting; limited resources and jury-rigged equipment encouraged creative solutions. For this print, Castro experimented with transparencies and photo-derived, halftone-printed layers. The powerful atmospheric image is built of large blocks of color held together by the center photograph.
