San Francisco Print Collective (SFPC) worked with several organizations to fight against the rising tide of evictions during the Dot Com bubble of the early 2000s. While this poster promotes a concert and cultural event, the altered portrait of Emiliano Zapata and a small, fierce calavera (from Mexican lithographer José Guadalupe Posada’s original) emphasize the underlying issue of cultural resilience. A growing fear of offending government leaders led to a more cautious attitude at Grafica’s homebase, the Mission Cultural Center. In response to the Center’s changing politics and economics, new and independent groups like the SFPC formed within Gráfica. This organizational independence also protected Gráfica, concealing the role the workshop played in politicized activities.
