Pinkney was a graphic designer for the Western Addition Cultural Center, an organization created at the same time as the Mission Cultural Center. Gráfica commonly printed for other cultural centers at a discounted rate. First celebrated on June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, Juneteenth marks the emancipation of slaves after the Civil War. Because of its Texan roots, recognition of Juneteenth often incorporates western themes, such as the cowboy-style font here. Pinkney also portrays Marcus Garvey, a Jamaican-born advocate of Pan Africanism, using the colors of his United Negro Improvement Association: red, black, and green, the symbolic colors of Black African liberation since 1920.
