Formed in 1984, San Diego-based Border Art Workshop/Taller de Arte Fronterizo presented a multimedia art event at Galería de la Raza the following year. The workshop formed an important cultural link for Mexican and Chicano artists on both sides of the border addressing issues of migration and cultural domination. Yañez, a collage artist, collaborated with printer Sances on this work. Sances used a wide array of techniques to mimic collage, incorporating torn paper, photographs, and silver ink. The figure expresses the ambivalence of the border. He appears at once to be flying and to be trapped by the border fence. Although made to advertise an event, the text is secondary to the image in this print. Minimal text was a signature style of Gráfica.
