Carmen Lomas Garza commissioned Gráfica to print this image. Sometimes, artists would simply drop off an image and expect a finished print on return. In this case, Lomas Garza was involved, aiming to approximate the feeling of her well-known gouache paintings. She inked the print’s separate layers and participated in every aspect of preparation.
Lomas Garza observes and updates tradition, both in subject matter and technique. Her flat, colorful figures follow folk traditions, while her imagery often addresses Tejano/a (Texan Mexican American) culture and daily family life. The work’s subtitle, “Little Piece of My Heart,” suggests that everyday activities can carry an intimate emotional charge.
