California State Senator John Briggs introduced Prop 6 in 1978. The ballot measure would have prohibited gay people from teaching, and allowed for any public school worker who spoke positively about homosexuality to be fired. This measure was the first attempt to restrict gay and lesbian rights through a statewide ballot measure. In the end, 60% of Californians voted against the initiative.
