Combining artistic techniques and unexpected materials intrigues me, so this challenge is particularly exciting to hopefully create something that would appeal to both the traditional printmaker and fiber artist. Since I primarily work with fabric and thread, I had to determine how to fulfill the printmaking aspect of this challenge. It would be best to work within my favorite motif, nature. This led me to go on a hike, seeking a tree stump that could be used for a rubbing. The idea came to me when I realized the annual tree rings looked like quilting threadwork, allowing me to combine quilting and printmaking. Label Type

The tree stump needed to be free from distracting chainsaw cuts and drenched with water to prevent paint from soaking into the wood before creating the rubbing showing distinct annual rings. The rubbing was sandwiched with black felt for batting and quilt threads were used to accentuate the annual rings. Radiating cracks were created with a traditional wood burning tool to give the appearance of weathering.
