The California Department of Water Resources measures and publishes the snowpack amounts with the statewide averages every March 1st. The white lines represent the snowpack in the Sierras, starting with the year 1975, showing each year thru 2015. Nearly one third of California’s water supply comes from the snow in the Sierra Nevada and lower Cascades. The fluctuations in precipi-tation illustrate the need for everyone to be prudent with their use of water.
