The central design motif of this piece was inspired by a shadow I photographed when visiting Manzanar, where Japanese Americans were incarcerated from 1942-45 in the cold, windy, dry, and bleak landscape of the California High Desert. Today you can see the bones of the lives lived there, including the ruins of eleven painstakingly constructed Japanese gardens. In size and dimensions, the piece references the Japanese scroll and it incorporates Boro stitching in lieu of binding.
