Kenojuak Ashevak Inuit/Cape Dorset, 1927–2013 Radiant Owl, 1996 Stonecut on rice paper Collection of the C.N. Gorman Museum, UC Davis. Gift of Gloria and Selig Kaplan. Kenojuak Ashevak was the first woman to be part of the West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative in Cape Dorset. While Ashevak drew various animals, she is well known for her elaborate illustrations of owls. In Inuit culture, the owl is revered as a source of wisdom, and believed to guide spirits of the dead into the afterworld.
