Kenojuak Ashevak was the first woman to be part of the West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative in Cape Dorset. While Ashevak drew various animals, she is well known for her elaborate illustrations of owls. In Inuit culture, the owl is revered as a source of wisdom, and believed to guide spirits of the dead into the afterworld.
