Osage artist Norman Akers explores issues of identity and culture, including Osage myths, place, and the idea of personal and cultural transformation. Drawing from tribal oral histories, maps, nature and art history references, the artist often explores the concept of a sense of place in his artworks, which, according to Akers, can have many interpretations.
“Maps, through symbolic representation, define boundaries and landmarks of the place we identify as home. Maps also have been used deceptively to create false borders and they work to rewrite history.” – Norman Akers
