“My ideal experience as manager of the stables would be clear skies, healthy animals, and happy guests.”
J.R. Gehres came to work at Yosemite Stables for a summer job, and it turned into a career that lasted almost 30 years.
The types of people that generate excitement for me are positive people who like to enjoy themselves while in our park. When a person is generally positive they’re just happy to be here, and they listen. They’re willing to do anything. It’s like being in Yosemite the first time. They’re all kinda awestruck. Those are the easy people. I mean they’re just happy to be out and away from their normal lives.
The most frustrating people are the ones who are misinformed and take away from the experience of Yosemite. The people who come here and have a limited amount of time and crunch it all together. They’re uptight. And instead of being open to anything, they’re just very narrow minded. They gotta do “this and this and this,” and it’s like being in the city. They’re in a hurry and they’re going to run over you just to get whatever they need just to get out of here. And you see that a lot. And you can’t talk to them. There’s no point. They’re set planning what they think it’s all about. And they’re not going to vary from it.
