"Recollecting Home" is a handmade book of banana paper and poetry. The physical and metaphorical materials echo the nature, food, smells attached to the textures and memory of her home. The triple accordion tunnel book includes xylene transferred text and digitally printed photographs, some folded, and laminated in the handmade paper so as to beg untouched discovery of the handwritten messages between the folds. The photographs are mementos of family records, documenting the encounter of people and places in Vietnam and Florida. Dedicated to Ông Bà Ngoại and Ông Bà Nội. Malery is an aspiring art conservator, papermaker, and bread baker based in NYC. She is most interested in investigating history through the labor and creativity of people who made everyday things with their hands. The piece "Recollecting Home" is a testament of her trials in recording family migrations in a book made with her hands, from pulp to print.
