Antonius-Tín Bui is a spontaneous shapeshifter and poly-disciplinary artist currently based in New Haven, CT. Their identity as a queer, non-binary, Vietnamese-American informs the way they employ beauty as a refuge for fellow marginalized communities. They have been collaborating with the Missing Piece Project to visualize hybrid identities and histories that confront the unsettling present since 2018.
In traditional Vietnamese funerals, immediate family members of the deceased wear white headbands to signify respect and to show mourning. By spreading 493 feet 6 inches, the entire length of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, across the base of the memorial, we reinscribed the narratives of Southeast Asian ancestors into the space. This monumental headband was the base for every dedicated object brought forth by members and their communities. Our assemblage of items not only reshapes the landscape and archive of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, but also democratizes historical narratives and memory work.
