Michael Roman arrived at Mission Gráfica in the late 1980s, employing a loose and expressive style growing out of his work with textiles. Roman’s technique of collaged and overlapping forms lent itself to making one-of-a-kind objects. He is perhaps most known for popularizing a style of printing on clothing that covered every square inch of fabric.
While Gráfica previously focused on technique and consistency, Roman’s arrival heralded a new, looser approach. He inspired many printmakers who imitated his bold patterns, use of Mexican folkloric imagery, and focus on single items or varied editions. In this print, Roman also incorporates imagery referring to African and Asian cultures.
