Desert Canterbury Bells (Phacelia campanularia), Bigelow’s Monkeyflower (Mimulus bigelovi) in Desert Wash “100 Year Bloom,” 1998 El Niño Event Joshua Tree National Park, Mojave Desert During the 1998 El Niño Event, Rob and Nita spent a month in Death Valley, Joshua Tree National Park and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park photographing this rare “100 year bloom.” Only seven years later, during the 2005 El Niño Event, they experienced a second “100 year bloom” and spent a month in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, Joshua Tree National Park, and Carrizo Plains, as well as several locations in the Arizona deserts.
