"More to the Story" — Understory kelps, much shorter in stature and found closer to the benthos, play an important in the kelp forest ecosystem, forming another layer of canopy over the reef. Sweeping movement can remove sand for enhanced holdfast growth, and may also deter grazing pressure. Diversity is essential to ecosystem function, so considering multi-species restoration beyond just bull kelp may be key in restoring and maintaining environmental balance.
