This bronze statue by French artist Antoine-Louis Barye was initially modeled around 1841. This piece, titled "Walking Lion” or “Le lion qui marche”, depicts a lion mid-stride, highlighting the animal’s strength and presence. Barye was known for his detailed animal sculptures, closely observing animal anatomy and movement. He is credited with helping to establish animal sculpture as an important art form.
The Bourn couple owned many bronze animal sculptures, including a version of this one, throughout their properties. They also owned another lion sculpture by Alfred Barye, son of Antoine-Louis Barye.
This piece was identified from historical photos of the Bourn house in San Francisco by a member of the Collection team and later found for sale. Although not the original statue owned by the Bourn family, Filoli is excited to have a similar one join the collection.
