Label

A William and Mary-style bench of carved walnut, upholstered in red velvet and tassel trim. The six legs below are topped with carved acanthus leaves and end on gadrooned (fluted) feet. The legs are joined together by X-shaped stretchers with a steeple-shaped finial in the center. During this era, the design of trims evolved significantly. Fringes and trims became incredibly important aspects of furniture design, often costing a significant percentage of the total amount. This bench features a braided tassel trim in red and gold, made to complement the red velvet of the cushion. This piece was originally in the Gentlemen’s lounge when the Bourns lived at Filoli, described in the 1936 house inventory as “6 legged bench upholstered in red english morocco”. The item is currently on rest and is not available to be seen in the House. Items go on “rest” to help preserve them for longer by limiting environmental damage that can be done to them (i.e., fading, dirt).
