Alfred Hair (1941-1970)
Royal Poinciana Tree
Oil On Upson Board Circa Early 1960s
Image Size 24" X 48"
Among all the paintings created by the Highwaymen, the Royal Poinciana Tree stands out as the most iconic and popular. Each artist produced their own interpretation of this piece. Notably, Alfred Hair's larger version, painted on Upson board, has been exhibited in Washington D.C., at U.S. Embassies in Europe, and in Canada. This painting has one of the most extensive travel histories of any work by the Highwaymen.
The brushwork in the foreground and sky showcases Hair's quick painting techniques, while he took the time to apply thick layers of paint to the trees and the fallen Poinciana leaves.
