Another smaller painting by Harold Newton depicting his skills much earlier in his career. Harold obviously was confident in his abilities and liberally showed them off with this painting which was done mostly by palette knife. The billowing clouds are layered with thick application of paint. Interrupting the calmness of a lazy river meandering into the distance at midday is his urgency to accomplish the work, no hesitation is done in creating his scene, but rather a sense that he could lay down all of the elements necessary to make a painting quickly, efficiently, and with little concern to the detail that he shows in his later works.
Here we are seeing a more impressionistic side to his style and his abilities. . Once again he creates a magnificent sky, full of clouds with subtle variations of hues and color. He was a master at anything he wished to accomplish, even at this early stage of his career. He is testing himself and flexing his painterly muscles and abilities.
