Description

Confederate Army coat with markings of a major (indicated by the insignia on the sleeves and the one gold star on the collar), and buttons from the United States Army; thought to have belonged to Alfred Moore O'Neal.

Context

Alfred Moore O'Neal was born in Florence in 1840, the son of Edward Asbury O'Neal (1818-1890). He attended West Point Military Academy but left to enlist in the Confederate army in March of 1861. He was captured at Petersburg in 1864 and sent to Johnson's Island Prison. He was released in July, 1865.
